A system of deemed consent for organ donation, also known as opt-out, has commenced in the Isle of Man.
This means that most adults will be considered to agree to being organ donors unless they record a decision otherwise.
The change on January 1 followed Tynwald’s approval of measures earlier this year to introduce the new system, bringing the island in line with the UK, Northern Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey.
The aim is to increase the number of organs available for donation.

Even with the opt out legislation in place, people are still encouraged to register their decision – whether to support as a donor or opt out.
The NHS Organ Donor Register will continue to be checked if organ donation is being considered, so it’s better that any decision is clearly expressed.
Public Health is also encouraging everyone to share their wishes with their loved ones, as family will still always be consulted before any organ donation takes place.
In Memory of Daniel
The legislation is known as ‘Daniel’s Law’, in memory of a Manx fifteen year-old called Daniel Boyde who passed away and went on to become an organ donor.
Cabinet Office Minister, David Ashford MHK, said: “I commend the work of Daniel’s mother, Diane, and the Charity who have campaigned for many years for this legislative change.
“Public Health continue working with the Organ Donation IOM charity, Manx Care, local media, and community groups to ensure people understand this significant change. An awareness campaign is running across the Island and will continue into the new year.”
Decisions can be made or updated via the NHS Organ Donor Register website, through the NHS app or by calling the Organ Donor Helpline on 0300 123 23 23.
