A closely contested game at Port-e-Chee saw visitors Wilmslow Wolves narrowly best Douglas 29-32 in the opening encounter of the Regional 2 North West season.
The day was marred by disaster for Douglas before action had commenced in anger, as scrum-half Nathan Robson went down with a serious ankle injury in the warm up. Kick off was delayed while ambulances attended to Robson, before he was taken to hospital for surgery.
A reorganised Douglas side matched Wilmslow almost stride for stride in the first half, although the visitors enjoyed a slender lead of 14-15 when the half-time whistle was blown.
Despite being almost inseparable once again throughout the second period, penalty kicks proved the difference maker with the visitors converting two of their three point efforts to Douglas’ one. Having both scored four tries and converted three, it was to be the Wolves who took five points back to Cheshire.
Douglas were credited with two losing bonus points for tries scored and margin of defeat, but will hope to bounce back when visiting Birkinhead Park this Saturday (September 26).
