There was a 4.5% drop in visitors to the Curraghs Wildlife Park over the last year, the DEFA Minister has revealed.
Claire Barber was asked for her department’s key performance indicators by Kate Lord-Brennan (Glenfaba & Peel).
The department had hoped for a year on year Increase of at least 5% from the baseline figure of 48,825 from the previous year.
However, there was actually a 4.55% drop in visitors, taking it down to 46,627.
Review
Last year the government announced consultants had been brought in to look at the park after it posted a £500,000 loss.
Options that were set to be considered were a charity model and rationalisation (cutbacks) in order to sustain the park in the long-term.
KPIs
Of the KPIs listed, all were green except for the Wildlife Park’s visitor numbers (red) and encouraging innovation and entrepreneurial behaviour in the agriculture sector by supporting at least four events, which was amber, but did not say how many had been supported.
In her written reply to Ms Lord-Brennan, Mrs Barber said: “DEFA’s work programmes span a broad range of activities that cover agriculture, food production, the environment, protection from harmful pests and diseases, underpin the built environment of the Island, and ensure our communities make the best choices when it comes to energy efficiency.
“Many functions are regulatory in nature and some are challenging to measure in quantitative terms.
“The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in the Department Plan seek to provide quantifiable targets in order to demonstrate performance, quality and delivery across the organisation.
“The specific KPIs were selected as they were considered to represent matters of value to the department and its stakeholders and therefore the Manx public, as well as being areas where measurements were attainable and gave an indication of progress.’
