The prison is still operating at near capacity, with a significant proportion of inmates linked to organised crime and drugs.
This comes as a new electronic tagging scheme is expected to ease prison issues but place additional demand on police resources.
Chief Constable Russ Foster told a Tynwald committee that of the prison population, “34% are linked to organised crime groups” and “20% linked to drugs.”
The new electronic tagging initiative for remand prisoners, approved by Tynwald last year, is in final testing.
Superintendent Stephen Maddocks confirmed the police will be responsible for monitoring breaches.
“As soon as the tag goes off, we need to be on onto it,” he said.
He anticipated “an extra demand on us,” particularly in responding immediately to breaches like exclusion zone violations.
While the scheme may alleviate pressure on the prison, Chief Constable Foster said its full implications are not yet clear, as “it’s still very much in its infancy”.
