Former politician Leonard Singer’s funeral to take place today

Former MHK, MLC and Ramsey Commissioner, Leonard Singer (d. Dec 23)

The former politician and Ramsey Town Commissioner Leonard Singer’s funeral service will take place today (January 4).

The service will take place at 1pm at Douglas Borough Cemetery followed by interment in the cemetery.

Charity donations have been requested in lieu of flowers.

Politician

Mr Singer trained as a pharmacist, qualifying from Liverpool College of Pharmacy in 1966.

He first entered politics in 1973 when he was elected to Stockport Metropolitan District Council, where he served until 1986.

After moving to the Island he set up a pharmacy in Ramsey, before being elected to the town’s local authority in 1991. He served as chairman in the 1995-96 municipal year.

Mr Singer served as one of Ramsey MHK’s first elected in 1996 and then elevated to the Legislative Council in 2003.

He resigned from the Legislative Council in 2006 to contest the House of Keys election, however he was unsuccessful. But his favour with the voters returned when in 2011 he ousted Anne Craine and became a Ramsey MHK once again. He served a full term but was ousted himself in 2016.

Mr Singer made a final attempt serve Ramsey in the Keys again in 2021, however he was unsuccessful.

Despite not regaining his place in ‘National’ politics, Mr Singer remained committed to the town and in 2021 was re-elected to Ramsey Commissioners.

When he died, Mr Singer had completed 50 years in politics.
