King William’s College and The Buchan School hosted a distinguished Founders’ Day celebration on Saturday.
The schools welcomed pupils, parents, alumni, staff, governors and honoured guests to reflect on the School’s traditions and its vision for the future.
The occasion featured inspiring speeches from Principal Damian Henderson, Chair of Governors Peter Clucas, guest of honour Dot Tilbury MBE and Head of School Emily O.
Founders Day
Chair of Governors Peter Clucas spoke with candour about the progress made since assuming his role in the difficult times of 2020.
He stressed the importance of the School Improvement Strategy (SIS), stating: “This is no remedial action plan, but a blueprint for the future.
“The SIS sets clear priorities – from academic achievement to pastoral excellence, international ethos to community engagement – ensuring we continue to offer an exceptional education and maintain our unique place at the heart of Manx life.”
Financial Pressures
Peter also addressed the impact of recent financial pressures, including the imposition of VAT on independent school fees.
He praised the cooperative approach between the School and Government, saying: “We are proud to be recognised as a vital island asset and a significant source of local employment.
“The ability to have direct constructive dialogue with Government has been much appreciated as we plan our future strategy.”
He emphasised the excitement felt around the new campus project for The Buchan School, describing it as: “A landmark development that will unify our Schools and enhance our facilities – creating a modern, inspiring environment from nursery through to Sixth Form.”
