Free Access to Heritage Sites for Open Days

Visitors will enjoy free access to heritage sites during open days to be staged across the island next month.

The open days will take place October 2-4 and October 9-11. The programme of events is now available and can be downloaded here.

The Heritage Open Days brings together museums, societies, community groups, individuals, and historic properties from across the 6sland to offer six days of completely free access, tours, guided walks, and activities.

New experiences on offer include:

  • Exploring the work that takes place behind the scenes at Manx National Heritage.
  • Uncovering the curious connection between Cronk Howe Mooar (Fairy Hill) and the Bayeux Tapestry.
  • Taking a vintage bus tour with Bus Vannin and Jurby Transport Museum.
  • Discovering fascinating Stories in the Stones at Kirk Andreas, showcasing some of the Isle of Man’s most impressive medieval crosses.

Popular returning events include tours of Government House State Rooms, behind-the-scenes visits to the Gaiety Theatre, exploring the workshops and steam sheds of the Isle of Man Railway, a special tour of Okell’s Brewery and tours of Rushen Abbey.

Bookings open at midday on September 24 with tickets available via manxnationalheritage.im

Manx National Heritage chief executive Connie Lovel said: “This much-loved annual festival celebrates the Isle of Man’s unique history, culture and community spirit, offering behind-the-scenes access to remarkable places, special experiences and hidden stories.

“Many of the buildings and landmarks featured in the programme are not normally open to the public, making Heritage Open Days a truly unique opportunity for discovery.

“There is something for everyone in this year’s programme, which opens doors, sparks curiosity and invites people of all ages to experience the Isle of Man’s rich heritage. Best of all, every event is completely free of charge.”
