A century of masonic life centered on Woodbourne House in Douglas, will be celebrated by opening the building to the public today.
All the men’s and women’s lodges will have representatives to show people around the building and explain some of the masonic items.
The building has been the home of Isle of Man Freemasonry since 1925.
Insight
People will be given an insight into the fraternal society from a spiral staircase which holds much significance for Masons.
“We will have some surprises for people attending,” says communications officer Tim Earl.
“For example, some of the work of Art Nouveau designer Archibald Knox who was a most distinguished Manx Freemason, will be on show.
“These include a masonic jewel he created and a drape used by Spencer Walpole Temperance Lodge, of which Knox was a member, to this day.”
Members of the Widows Sons Masonic Bikers Association will be at the building’s entrance as a reminder that TT supreme champion Joey Dunlop was an active and highly respected Mason.
Freemasons
Items from the newly completed Masonic Museum in Ramsey will be on show at the open day.
The island’s 480 Masons have been encouraged to “bring a non-mason family member or friend” to show off their meeting rooms and reflect on the benefits of being a freemason.
Tea, coffee and a bar are available, entrance is free and the event is between 10am and 2:00pm.
