The MHK behind the motion calling for a vote of no confidence in the island’s Chief Minister, says that the vote was always destined to fail.
Tim Glover has defended his action in putting down the motion on the House of Keys order paper.
The Arbory, Malew and Castletown member told Manx.News that “we needed to have that debate, cause there’s been a lot of tension, a lot of talk, it’s been festering away in this building and in the public domain so we needed to clear the air”.
Glover said he didn’t lobby or seek a seconder, he said his motions were purely for members to “pin their colours to the mast”.
Chris Thomas (Douglas Central) seconded the motion enabling the debate to take place. Mr Thomas had already offered himself up as Alf Cannan’s successor, if the motion was carried.
Glover hopes this debate has given food for thought and he hopes Council of Ministers and Departments go away and reflect on some of the home truths that were told to them.
Ministers ‘Arrogant’ over resignation threats
While other members accused Glover of political grandstanding, Mr Glover hit back at Ministers who stated they would resign if the motion passed today.
He said he hadn’t grown any admiration for the ministers who said they would resign and who would not work for anyone other than Mr Cannan – “That was arrogant” said Mr Glover “and to come out with quotes like that was not their finest hour”.
Despite Tim Glover’s motion being heavily voted down, (6 for, 18 against) the speeches were still damning of the Chief Minister and the way in which the administration was operating.
But Glover now says its a time for a collaborative and coercive and a less cut-throat take from Council of Ministers and the Cief Minister and that they do embrace backbenches – he said that ministers have probably spoken more to backbenches in the last few days than they have for quiet some time, but it is a time for reflection and move forward to get what is best for the Isle of Man.
