GP Contract Reform on The Agenda

Manx Care is exploring a reform of its contracts with GPs, mirroring a successful approach used with dentists, to address ongoing pressures on primary care access.

This follows data showing access to GPs was a top concern in the thousands of contacts made to the MCALS service last year.

While a virtual GP pilot has seen “really high engagement” and “satisfaction is high,” officials acknowledge more is needed.

Framework

CEO Theresa Cope told a Tynwald committee that work is needed on the contractual framework.

“We do need to now think about how we work with our GPs differently,” she said, aiming for clarity and to “incentivise GPs to do this type of work.”

The model used at the Ramsey Group Practice was however cited as a blueprint. “It’s massively improved the relationship, the outcomes for our patients,” said Ms Cope, describing a hub with “a wider range of clinicians wrapped around”.

Interim Director of Operations Shaun Stacey added that using other professionals helps “support the work of GPs and to deliver more access”.

Manx Care plans to replicate this collaborative, co-created model across the island.
