Gym Hours Cut ‘Not About Costs’

A cut in hours for the NSC’s gym reflects usage rather than a bid to cut costs, the minister responsible for it has said.

Daphne Caine was questioned about the early closure of the gym at weekends in Keys.

From January 4, the gym will close at 5pm instead of 8pm on weekends while the spa will close at 4pm instead of 7pm.

Mrs Caine told MHKs: “This change, which reflects lower demand in the gym during evening sessions on Saturdays and Sundays will affect the gym and spa facilities.

“Customers were given a month’s notice of the changes, and the department believes that the impact of this change will be minimal and still allow customers to regularly participate in both physical activity and access the spa suite.”

She added that the chance was not a policy shift, but an operational change by the NSC.

Minimal Savings

Unsurprisingly the backbenchers weren’t convinced and pushed for details about what savings were being made.

She told them that no full-time members of staff would be impacted but some part-time staff may be which might bring a “very small saving in terms of the staff time for those areas, and potentially an energy saving as well”.
