James Hampton has become the first candidate to declare for Glenfaba & Peel for this year’s General Election.
Mr Hampton said “almost every problem” with Isle of Man government is rooted in “the structure and format of government itself”.
He described the Manx electoral system as “essentially unique.”
“We are pretty much the only place in the world with free and open elections, but no influence on the policies we receive,” he said.
He argued that the public has no effective way to shape policy after votes are cast.
“There is no way for the public to authoritatively confirm what they want, no effective counterbalance and no real accountability,” Mr Hampton said.
He suggested that disappointment with government is a predictable outcome of the current arrangements.
“If we can’t actually indicate what we want, and there’s no effective system of control or consequence once government has formed, it shouldn’t really be a surprise that we’re often disappointed with the outcomes,” he said.
Mr Hampton said he is “offering focused direct action on this root issue.”
“If you want progress, or change, or even just the basics done right, this is the only realistic proposal,” he added.
Sitting MHKs Tim Crookall and Kate Lord-Brennan have yet to declare their intentions.
