The Chief Minister is to be asked what discussions have taken place with UK authorities regarding a proposed nuclear waste disposal facility on the Cumbrian coast.
The question, tabled by Arbory, Castletown, and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse for next week’s Tynwald sitting, follows renewed UK government plans for a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) to store radioactive waste underground.
The Isle of Man lies just over 30 miles west of potential sites under consideration.
A similar proposal was rejected by Cumbria County Council in 2013 after local opposition.
The UK government has since restarted the process, emphasising that any facility would require community consent.
The island has previously voiced concerns over the existing Sellafield site and its potential to impact the island’s fishing industry.
