Sarah Webster’s 100km World Championship run was brought to a premature end, when severe leg cramps forced her to retire with just 2.5km left to cover.
Competing on Sunday (September 20) in Galacia, Spain, the 24hr World Record holder had been among the medals and only lost her third place as she ground to a halt on the final lap. The fierce Spanish heat took it’s toll, however, and Webster was handed only her third DNF in over 30 years of competition.
Despite being in considerable pain, Webster said she “desperately wanted to finish for the team, but it wasn’t to be.”
The event was ultimately won by American Courtney Olsen, in a time of 7hrs 10mins 31secs.
