Inaugural Backyard Ultra Starts Tomorrow

The first edition of the Backyard Ultra Isle of Man is set to provide 174 foolhardy souls with the opportunity to test themselves in one of the most physically and mentally demanding formats in sport.

Starting tomorrow (October 2), the Ramsey Crookall sponsored race will see athletes complete laps of a 4.167 mile course in Archallagan Plantation, on the hour, every hour. Those who do not complete the loop within the hour will be eliminated, whittling down the field until only two remain.

They will then run together until one can no longer face another lap. Provided that the remaining runner can endure a final agonising circuit, they’ll be crowned the champion.

The event is expected to last for at least two days, although ultrarunner Phil Gore’s world record currently stands at 119 loops, a monumental 495.9 miles. Sarah Perry, holder of the women’s world record at a staggering 395.9 miles, is set to launch the race.

Several local sponsors have put their name to the extreme test of endurance, including Manx Petroleum, who are providing backing for the athletes village.
