IOM Meats Chair: ‘Execute a New Plan at Pace’

The new chair of Isle of Man Meats hopes that the new board can ‘execute a new plan at pace’.

New chair Damien Corcoran wants to focus on talking to producers and retailers to create solid action plans for the plant to move forwards.

Its no secret that the plant has failed numerous times over the past year with breakdowns, delays and the disposal of meat.

Under the helm of Damien, there are hopes the plant can move forwards through engagement with local producers.

Manx.News spoke to the new chair of Isle of Man Meats:

The new chair said: “Initially, I’m really here to listen, to learn and to understand all of the stakeholders that touch the abattoir.

“I want to talk with farmers, I want to talk with our butchers, our retailers, and of course all our team in the abattoir itself.”

Damien was brought up and educated on the Isle of Man and has a background in food retail.

New Board and Chair

A new chair wasn’t the only new addition to the Isle of Man Meats board, along with Damien four other members joined the board:

  • Rob Teare: A Manx butcher with substantial red meat experience.
  • Dr Jonathan Birnie: An agricultural economist and the principal author of a comprehensive report on the abattoir.
  • Philip Birnie: An experienced red meat businessman with expertise in abattoir and meat processing operations.
  • Andrew McKeown: A Manx farmer and haulier who has industry experience in the abattoir sector, particularly procurement

Following the changes the Meat Plant Board will have seven members in the total, with Rebecca Miah (Managing Director) and Allan Skillicorn (Isle of Man Fat Stock Marketing Association (FMA) Director remaining on the Board.
