Island Included in New Trade Deal

Manx businesses will be able to benefit from the UK’s new trade deal with India.

The UK-India trade deal, announced this week, aims to boost economic ties by reducing tariffs, increasing market access, and fostering investment.

Predominantly the UK and Indian benefits will include technology, pharmaceuticals, and professional services, with easier mobility for skilled workers.

The UK government’s summary of the agreement says it will also provide a mechanism for the agreement to be extended to the Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories.

A spokesperson for the Manx government said: “The Isle of Man, along with the other Crown Dependencies, is included in the UK’s new trade agreement with India in relation to the exchange of goods.

“There is provision for this to be extended further, in terms of services or labour for example, on agreement between the UK and India.”

Left Outside

There had been criticism from the Crown Dependencies of the last UK government failing to represent the CDs in negotiations over the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.

However, following talks with Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, the UK offered assurances on future agreements.
