With flu cases in the UK rising earlier than expected this year, Public Health is asking islanders to remain vigilant and take up the offer of vaccination if eligible.
While the Isle of Man is not currently experiencing the same surge, the early UK increase is a concern ahead of the festive period. The flu season in the UK began in late October, several weeks sooner than usual.
Director of Public Health, Dr. Matt Tyrer, said: “We want to remind everyone to take simple steps to reduce the risk of catching flu or other respiratory illnesses. Vaccination remains the best way to protect against serious illness, particularly for those most at risk.”
Eligible groups include children aged 2-3, school-aged children, pregnant women, people over 65, those with long-term health conditions, carers, and frontline health and social care workers.
Uptake on the Island has been steady, with 47% of eligible residents vaccinated so far.
Teresa Cope, CEO of Manx Care, added: “Respiratory illnesses like flu can cause serious complications. A significant spread of flu locally could lead to increased hospitalisations and even deaths. Please get vaccinated if you are eligible.”
Residents are advised to practise good hand hygiene, keep homes well-ventilated, and stay at home if unwell. Further details are available at gov.im/flu.
