John Watterson has been named a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the King’s Birthday Honours List.
The award recognises his outstanding contribution to Manx journalism and sport over more than 50 years.
Beginning his career in newspapers at the age of 15, Watty rose to become Sports Editor, shaping the coverage of sport in the Isle of Man.
His reporting chronicled generations of local sporting achievement, from rising stars to legendary figures such as Sir Mark Cavendish,, David Knight MBE, and Yasmin Ingham.
Respected
A respected authority on events like the Isle of Man TT and the exploits of the Dunlop family, Watty’s work became a vital part of the island’s sporting heritage.
Beyond journalism, Watty has dedicated himself to voluntary roles, including with the Isle of Man Sports Awards Committee, Ellan Vannin Cycling Club, Ramsey Motorcycle Club, and as Chairman of the Auto Cycle Union (ACU), where he influenced the future of Manx motorsport.
His work with the ACU Benevolent Fund reflected his commitment to the welfare of the sporting community.
An accomplished cyclist and runner himself, Watty has been a modest yet passionate ambassador for Manx sport at every level.
The King has made Mr John David Watterson an MBE in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours List for Outstanding Services and Dedication to Sport in the Isle of Man.
Karen Norton has also been awarded the British Empire Medal while The Very Reverend Nigel Philip Godfrey has been named an MBE.
