Lifeboats Called Out to Stricken Fishing Vessel

Port St Mary RNLI launched both of its lifeboats following reports of a small fishing vessel experiencing mechanical difficulties while close to shore off Langness.

The vessel had anchored, but the anchor was reported to be dragging.

The lifeboat crews were called just before 2pm yesterday (October 11).

The station’s Trent-class all-weather lifeboat Henry Heys Duckworth and D-class inshore lifeboat Frank Martin were launched.

A Port St Mary RNLI spokesperson said: “The lifeboats arrived on scene nine minutes later and located the casualty vessel, a small fishing boat.

“Prior to the lifeboats’ arrival, a nearby speedboat had taken the fishing vessel under tow. However, while assisting the fishing boat, the speedboat also developed engine problems and was then itself in need of assistance.”

The fishing vessel was taken under tow and escorted safely towards harbour by the D-Class lifeboat, while the Trent-class lifeboat took the speedboat under tow.

Both rescued vessels were left safely in Castletown Harbour, and the occupants checked over by IOM Coastguard.

The spokesperson added: “Whilst this incident had a positive outcome, we’d like to remind all water users of the importance of preparing before heading to sea.

“Regular maintenance of vessels, wearing suitable lifejackets and carrying reliable means of communication can make a significant difference should something unexpected happen on the water.”
