A former retail regional manager has been fined £2,100 after admitting three charges of fraud.
Andrew Corrie, 53, of Douglas, was sentenced by magistrates on Thursday.
The former regional manager of the Co-op had returned three items to M&S to claim refunds.
However, the items were in fact not the items that he claimed they were, with Corrie returning items of a lower value and swapping the tags.
The court heard this happened on three occasions, on May 23 2023, January 22 2024 and February 24 2024 and and had cost the retail giant £290 in total.
Defence advocate Jim Travers said his client has suffered several traumas in the past year-and-a-half and had acted in a way that, Mr Travers said, could be seen as a “something of a cry for help”.
He said there was “no explicable reason” for Corrie’s actions and said they were “entirely out of character” for the man, who has since sought professional support for the traumas.
Mr Travers said his client was being well supported through the court process, with some of those supporting him in court for the sentencing.
Sophisticated
Chairman of the bench David Christian told Corrie he was “previously a man of good character” and said that magistrates considered his offending to be “sophisticated”.
He added that it was a “needless offence”, but that magistrates accepted that the personal trauma that he had experienced would have had an impact on him.
Magistrates fined him £2,100 and ordered him to pay £125.
Corrie had also offered to reimburse M&S for the £290, which was also ordered.
Mr Christian told Corrie to “draw a line under this and get on with your life”.
