A new project by Culture Vannin will bring the Manx language to over a thousand young people across the island through Guiding and Scouting.
Running from September 2025 to September 2026, ‘Gaelg Aboo!’ is aimed at young people aged 4–18 in Girl Guiding Isle of Man and Scouts Isle of Man, and will mark the Year of the Manx Language 2026.
With more than 70 units island-wide, including Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts, the project has the potential to reach over 1,200 young people.
Manx Language Badge
Through fun, practical and meaningful activities, children and leaders will learn everyday Manx words and phrases with visiting instructors in their units, co-ordinated by Culture Vannin.
These workshops will be tailored for each age group, and supported by specially designed resources.
A key feature of the project is the creation of a brand-new ‘Gaelg Aboo!’ badge – the first Guiding and Scouts badge ever dedicated to the Manx language.
The badge will be awarded to participants who complete a series of age-appropriate challenges linked to the workshops and follow-on activities.
Project Lead
Ruth Keggin Gell, Manx Language Development Officer at Culture Vannin, will lead the project alongside the heads of Girl Guiding and Scouts Isle of Man.
Ruth is an experienced teacher, with a background in both primary and secondary education, with a passion for community engagement.
The project has been made possible by a grant from the Rotary Club of Douglas.
In addition to the workshops, leaders will be given access to a digital handbook and an online pack of easy-to-use learning resources to help units work towards their badges.
