Manx National Heritage has responded to concerns about its maintenance of the Laxey Wheel.
An anonymous post on Facebook called the state of the heritage site a “disgrace”, pointing to overgrown pathways, broken steps and railings, and damage to information boards.
The anonymous user also criticised MNH for rarely praising the volunteers that maintain the site.
The post amassed more 100 likes and over 75 comments, most of which agreed with the user.
In response, a spokesperson for MNH said: “There is a phased plan of works ongoing at the Laxey Wheel. The new visitor centre opened in mid-July and phased work is ongoing to complete maintenance around the site – including the installation of new visitor interpretation signage and landscaping, with work starting this week.
“Throughout the conservation works at the Great Laxey Wheel, we have worked in close partnership with members of the Laxey Mines Group, who have provided exceptional support with works both above and below ground.
“On an entirely voluntary basis, their specialist knowledge, practical expertise and enthusiasm have been instrumental in helping deliver the project successfully.”
The spokesperson added: “Just under £2m has been invested over the last five years to keep the Laxey Wheel turning and to carry out essential conservation work.
“Since opening in March, we have had 14,000 visitors to the site – a 5% increase on this time last year – and visitor feedback has been positive.”
