Manx youngsters shine in Warrington

Whilst this weekend’s action has been dominated by Marathon running, a group of four promising young athletes travelled to Warrington on Saturday to take part in their early-season outdoor Track & Field Open Meeting.

Issy Kennaugh (Northern AC) and Sophie Kaighin (Manx Harriers) were competing in the U15 Girls category, Eve Martin and Mollie McMullan (both Manx Harriers) in the U13 Girls.

All are in the first year of these age groups.

Eve won the 1200 metres in a time of 4:02.01, and was third in the high jump with 1.25 metres.

Her time in the 1200 metres was within six seconds of the age group IOM record held by Macy Hillier.

She also ran 12.95 seconds in the 70 metres hurdles to finish fourth, missing third place by a hair’s breadth.

Mollie was seventh out of 17 across the two heats of the 800 metres in a time of 2:52.39, fourth in the high jump with 1.15 meters and ninth overall in the 200 metres in a time of 34.26 seconds.

Issy was fourth in the 75 metres hurdles with 13.51 seconds, sixth across the two heats of the 100 metres with 14.15 seconds, and fourth in the 200 metres with 29.60 seconds.

The latter race was incredibly tight as the third placed girl recorded the same time.

Sophie was fifth in the 75 metres hurdles with 16.60 seconds, fifth in the mixed age and gender high jump with 1.30 metres (third female) and second in the javelin with 16.07 metres.

There were many personal bests set, some by big margins, and a lot of experience of new events was gained.

And most importantly of all, I hear they all had a lot of fun during the day!
