Although the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham are well behind us, it was only recently that Team Isle of Man’s ‘Spirit of the Games Award’ was able to be presented to the recipient, Matthew Bostock.
The new award was generously provided to Team Isle of Man by the parents of Leonie Cooil, the Chef de Mission for the 2018 Games hosted in the Gold Coast, who sadly passed away in 2019.
Its purpose is to recognise the endeavour from a Team Isle of Man athlete or official that best epitomises determination and true Manx spirit.
Leonie was proud to represent the Isle of Man and this award is a legacy to the contribution she made.
Spirit of the Games Award
Athletes and officials of Team Isle of Man had determined that cyclist Matthew Bostock should be the first worthy recipient.
He had been involved in a major crash at the Lee Valley Velodrome while competing in the second qualifying heat in the men’s 15km scratch race, an incident that was watched live on TV by millions of people around the world.
Despite being battered and bruised he still managed to compete in the Mens’ Road Race the following week.
Matthew now competes for UCI pro cycling team Bolton Equities Black Spoke.
His award was presented to him by Basil Bielich, President of the Isle of Man’s Commonwealth Games Association.
