The MHK who introduced the AssistedDying Bill to Tynwald has welcomed a vote by MPs to support a potential law change in the UK.
Earlier today MPs voted 330 to 275 to allow the UK’s bill to be further scrutinised, but does not mean it will definitely become law.
Dr Alex Allinson (Ramsey) said the vote showed that the island is “part of a wider change in society”.

He told Manx.News: “Across the British Isles the public have supported the principal of terminally ill people being able to have greater choice and autonomy about their deaths.
“The Bill which has now been supported by MPs in Westminster by an impressive margin is very similar to the Assisted Dying Bill which was passed by the House of Keys in July and is currently being debated by the Legislative Council who held an session this week to take evidence on the key principals of capacity and safeguards.
“Today’s result shows that the progress on the Isle of Man is part of a wider change in society as to how we want to provide greater dignity for those dying from a terminal illness, and shows that Manx politicians are truly reflecting the aspirations of our community.”
The Assisted Dying Bill is expected to return to LegCo next month.
