Members of the House of Keys will receiving a higher salary as a result of the agreement for Public Services Commission.
The PSC agreed a 4% rise to gross pay for the year 2024-25 for PSC employees.
The annual sum payable to a MHKs and the President of Tynwald is the amount at the mid-point between spine points 40 and 41 of the Public Services Commission Pay Scales, while MLCs (excluding the President) are paid the amount at spine point 39.
This system was devised to replace the previous situation where members were asked to vote on their levels of pay and followed a review by a committee and a public consultation.
Members are not involved in negotiations.
Increase
As a result of this, MHKs will see their pay rise from £75,907 to £78,943.28.
However, spare a thought for those poor MLCs who will see their pay rise to just £74,525.36, all without having to face the public in an election.
On top of this, the Chief Minister gets an extra 30%, the Speaker, ministers and President get an extra 15%, while chairs of the Post Office, OFT, MUA, Public Accounts Committee and PSC get an extra 5%.
Comparisons
By contrast to our members, in Jersey the current Assembly of States Members are each paid £50,000 per annum, regardless of whether they take on additional Ministerial or Scrutiny responsibilities.
In Guernsey it is much more complicated in part due to its structure of government, but their politicians have recent voted to drop their pay due to constraints on national budgets.
ITV has reported: “The Chief Minister, Guernsey’s highest-paid political position, will take home £82,229, a drop of around £2,500.
“Members of Policy and Resources and the Presidents of most other committees will be paid £63,181.
“Meanwhile, the Presidents of the States Assembly and Constitution Committee and Scrutiny Committee will see the largest salary cut: from £65,135 to £56,166.
“This will bring them in line with the President of Development and Planning. All other deputies will see an increase from £48,213 to £49,151.”
The basic annual salary of an MP in the House of Commons is £91,346, plus expenses.
