The Assisted Dying Bill faces its final hurdle in LegCo today as members look to fire off their amendments back to the Keys.
Having taken evidence and considered clauses, MLCs will vote on the final stage before MHKs consider the alterations.
One of the biggest amendments has been to the residency requirements, with MLCs rejecting the Keys’ five year rule in favour of a one year residency requirement, providing any terminal illness is diagnosed after that year has passed.
This, MLCs believed, is a fair balance between the service only being available to residents and not unfairly preventing someone who has lived here for several years being unable to use it.
Another amendment will also require anyone seeking an assisted death to be registered with a GP on the island.
It will also provide a chance for the public to understand the views of the island’s new Bishop Tricia Hillas as she will be required to vote for or against the Bill as it currently stands.
