Plans have been submitted for a mobile renal unit at Ramsey Cottage Hospital as refurbishment works continue to face significant setbacks.
The hospital has been undergoing extensive remedial works following a rodent infestation, with the building handed over to the DoI in December 2025.
Initial assessments suggested the building could be operational by April 2026, but further investigations revealed additional defects including fire stopping and ventilation issues.
While the Minor Injuries Unit and Radiology departments are now complete and due to return in mid-May, large areas remain closed.
Services including Renal Dialysis, Dental, Wound Management, Physiotherapy, Theatre Facilities, Kitchen services and Training Rooms are still unfit for occupation.
A recent independent condition survey confirmed that significant further investment is required to bring the facility to an appropriate operational standard.
In a covering letter supporting the planning application, Manx Care’s Director of Infrastructure Manager Aneurin Pritchard said: “The proposed unit will provide a standalone fully equipped, compliant clinical accommodation and will enable the continuation and reinstatement of essential renal services while refurbishment works to the main hospital building continue.”
He added: “The proposal will ensure continuity of critical public healthcare services for the local community, without giving rise to material harm to visual amenity, residential amenity or highway safety.”
The unit is described as temporary and reversible within the hospital’s existing grounds.
