A mechanical failure has resulted in the planned Mountain Road works to be delayed.
The Mountain Road will not now close today (Wednesday 2 April) for works by the DoI.
However, the Police have closed the section of road between Creg ny Baa and Bungalow this morning to undertake collision investigations. It is anticipated that the road will reopen prior to 2pm.
The DoI said that it isn’t able to do the works it had planned due to an issue at the asphalt plant at Poortown Quarry which has suffered a gearbox failure and cannot produce asphalt.
It said: “The planned works on the mountain include significant resurfacing works and installation of three new drainage culverts. Re-profiling the carriageway will require approximately 3500 tonnes of asphalt.
“Resurfacing or road reconstruction works on the TT Mountain Circuit have to be completed a month ahead of the first practice session to ensure that the new surface is sufficiently trafficked prior to racing.
“As it cannot yet be confirmed when our asphalt plant will be back in operation, it has been decided that it is prudent to postpone these works.”
The planned closure was also to allow installation of TT race equipment and cyclical maintenance works.
The A18 Mountain Road will therefore now close between Creg ny Baa and the Bungalow from 9:30am on Monday April 7, until Friday April 11 and from the Bungalow to Ramsey from 9:30am on Monday April 14 to Thursday April 17 to facilitate pre-TT works.
This closure will be on a 24 hour a day basis. The road will be reopened earlier if the works are completed sooner.
