A new artistic mural has been unveiled at the Gaiety Theatre which captures 125 years of the rich history and enduring spirit of the theatre.
The striking visual installation in the Circle Bar was conceived and designed by local creative studio 572 and features nearly 200 images supplied by performing societies and individuals associated with the theatre and supported by the Friends of the Gaiety Theatre.
Together, they form a tribute to those who have performed on its stage, as well as to the heritage of the building itself.
Celebrating the Gaiety
The opening was attended by Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer and Lady Lorimer MBE, the Minister for Education, Sport and Culture Daphne Caine, political members for DESC Sarah Maltby and Paul Craine MLC, and representatives of the Friends of the Gaiety Theatre, including Mervin Stokes MBE, marking the mural as a significant addition to the theatre’s anniversary commemorations.
Bill Smedley Chair of the Friends of the Gaiety Theatre Committee said: “This project is both a celebration and a reminder of the countless people who have made the Gaiety what it is today.
“The mural belongs as much to the community as it does to the theatre, honouring 125 years of creativity, performance and shared memories. We hope it will spark many more memories and conversations when enjoyed over a refreshment before a performance.”
