The Treasury Minister has dismissed calls for separate direct funding for Hospice Isle of Man, despite MHKs urging for a clear and sustainable financial framework.
During question time Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Morehouse asked if direct grants could support hospice funding, particularly for palliative care services.
Dr Alex Allinson said he acknowledged Hospice Isle of Man’s role in nearly half of all island deaths but stated, “There are no current plans to put in place separate and direct funding arrangements for hospice.”
Instead, he pointed to existing service-level agreements with Manx Care.
Palliative
Mr Morehouse highlighted Jersey’s increased palliative care funding ahead of potential assisted dying legislation.
The minister noted hospice services were recovering from COVID-19 while facing higher costs and reduced donations, but said it would maintain its relationship with Manx Care.
Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas warned hospice funding could become a “residual” budget item when allocated through intermediaries like Manx Care.
However Dr Allinson said that hospice services must be “properly overseen and commissioned” by health authorities.
Despite further questioning, the Minister remained firm that hospice funding would be managed through existing agreements rather than direct Treasury grants.
