Noble’s Hospital has received accreditation from the British Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy under their Global Antimicrobial Stewardship Accreditation Scheme.
Antimicrobial stewardship refers to the control measures used to ensure that anti-infective medications, such as antibiotics, are used appropriately.
This is increasingly vital as the poor use or overuse of antibiotics leads to the development of antimicrobial resistance rendering treatments ineffective.
This can lead to longer hospital stays, increased risk of death, and the spread of infections to others.
Antimicrobial Accreditation
Earlier in 2024, a dedicated team from Noble’s applied for this accreditation submitting evidence of their work.
In September, external assessors from BSAC conducted a site visit and a panel of international experts judged that key standards were being met at Noble’s and awarded the hospital Level 2 accreditation.
Dr Rizwan Khan, Consultant Microbiologist, said: “I am thrilled that we have received Level 2 Global Accreditation for the work my colleagues and I have done across Manx Care to help combat the significant risks posed by antimicrobial resistance.
“Only a handful of healthcare organisations across the British Isles have attained this accreditation, and so it not only provides assurance that we are doing things right, but also puts Noble’s hospital on the international map.”
Sheila Lloyd, Interim Executive Director of Nursing and Allied Health Professions added: “This is a fantastic achievement for the Island’s healthcare, which has emerged purely as a result of the passion and drive for excellence shown by our colleagues in the antimicrobial stewardship team.
“Having this accreditation will allow the team to continue with confidence in their good work whilst also providing suggestions for improvements, all with the goal of enhancing patient care and protecting the health of our Island community. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
