A planning application has been submitted for a sport and wellness centre at the historic Nunnery Estate in Douglas.
The project, named ‘HABIT’, is set to include the Isle of Man’s first indoor padel club, a wild spa, sauna, natural outdoor pool, and glasshouse dining in a nature-rich setting.
The application also cites the need for landscaping, as well as the implementation of drainage infrastructure and other associated works. The site is currently vacant, and would retain its carpark should the proposal be accepted.
Local couple Johnny and Loni Evans are leading the development, alongside Miles and Pippa Pettit, the husband and wife who masterminded the beloved ‘NOA’.
Speaking after the plans were announced, Mr Evans said: “We share one ambition: to make something brilliant here.
“Not exclusive, not occasional – a place people fold into their everyday lives, all year round, and one more thing that makes the island such a special place to visit.”
At One with Nature
The team involved say they “want the landscape to be part of what makes HABIT distinctive”, adding that they are planning to implement “gardens, paths, decks and outdoor spaces will connect the padel barn, glasshouse, natural swimming pool and wellness areas.”
It is also suggested that wildlife-friendly planting alongside bird, bat and insect nesting and hibernation structures will provide food, shelter and habitat and support biodiversity. Native trees, shrubs and traditional Manx hedge banks are set to be included too.
Local Influence
The project has been developed with a team of local practices and consultants, including McGarrigle Ayre Architects, March Consultants, BB Consulting Engineers, Project Fire and Manx Roots, combining to lead planning submission, padel barn design, services and arboriculture.
Landscape architecture and environmental design practice Urquhart & Hunt have also been involved.
Plans were submitted in July and are being considered by the planning authority, and a consultation on the application has been scheduled for November 13.
