Crowds gathered outside the Tynwald buildings yesterday to welcome His Majesty King Charles during his visit to the Isle of Man in his capacity as Lord of Man.
Well‑wishers lined the approach to the parliamentary complex, hoping to catch a glimpse of the monarch and share a moment of the historic occasion.
“It was 1977 the last time I was this close to royalty,” one man told us, recalling seeing Queen Elizabeth II during the Silver Jubilee. “But today I’m on a day off, and I’m still coming to see the King.”
Others said the visit was a chance to show appreciation for the island’s royal connection. “I like the royals, so I wanted to welcome him here to the Isle of Man,” one woman said.
Several people highlighted the significance of King Charles’ role as Lord of Man. “He’s the Lord of Man, isn’t he? So it’s got to be worth seeing,” another attendee said, adding that he was looking forward to the King’s later appearance on the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway.
For some, the visit was about visibility and pride. “I think it just puts us on the map a little bit… why not come and see us here and get the welcome that he needs and wants,” one supporter said.
Among the crowds were school children, soon of whom are currently learning about the monarchy, they were able to make lasting memories of seeing King Charles in person.
King Charles met members of the public outside Tynwald before continuing his programme of engagements across the island, including a trip to Douglas Promenade and the historic horse tramway.
