Pension Reform Delays ‘disappointing’

Onchan District Commissioners have expressed disappointment at the government’s failure to progress long‑agreed reforms to the local government pension scheme.

The Board says the Local Government Superannuation Scheme, which is still based on England and Wales provisions last updated in 2012, has not been modernised despite agreement with the Department of Infrastructure to move to the Government Unified Scheme model.

They say the lack of legislative drafting has stalled the project, which they argue would deliver savings to ratepayers through GUS’s cost‑sharing mechanism, where employers meet 25% of changes in pension costs and members 75%.

The Commissioners also highlight administrative inefficiencies created by operating a scheme based on superseded UK rules.
