An online petition has been set up on change.org up to save Peel Sailing and Cruising Club.
Last week, Peel Commissioners confirmed the sailing club will have its lease taken back – but not until 2027 when the current one expires.
The local authority says it needs to take the building back to do maintenance work including electrical, plumbing and the roof.
However, the sailing club claims Peel Commissioners hasn’t spoken to it prior to making the decision.
Petition for sailing club
The petition accuses the Commissioners ‘poor decision-making’, and references the Oie Voaldyn Festival that was cancelled after ‘Mrs Moughtin opposed it because a sponsor might compete with nearby businesses such as the one she works at’.
It also criticised the Commissioners for a ‘failed planning application for an overblown, poorly thought-out clubhouse at the tennis courts’, which the petition says was done ‘without any attempt to ask if ratepayers in Peel wanted to pay for it’.
The petition calls for the board to immediately reverse its decision on the Sailing Club and assure the future of a facility which provides invaluable services to Peel.
The petition can be found here.
