Petition on Could be Biggest Ever

Organisers of a petition against the proposed offshore windfarm say they believe it could be the biggest petition ever collected on the island.

Ørsted’s proposed Mooir Vannin windfarm would be built along the island’s east coast if approval is granted by ministers.

While the island would be set to benefit financially from the proposed windfarm, objectors have pointed to damage it would do to the island’s coastal views and potential costs to taxpayers.

Launched just over a week ago, the petition has raised over 4,000 signatures.

Organisers No Offshore Turbines 4 Isle of Man told Manx.News they believe the petition is “heading into territory of the largest ever petition numbers in Manx history”.

They added: “We believe with current trends, we are on target to reach at least 10,000 signatories within the next month, which would be an equivalent to 30% of the actual voting public in the last 2021 election!”

A petition in 2020 calling on the government to reinstate the Senior Race Day bank holiday raised over 5,000 signatures before it was announced it was being moved to later in the summer.
