Politicians Can’t Fix This

Two leading figures in the island’s cancer charities have called for doctors not politicians to be appointed to a new committee.

When Tynwald sits later this month the DHSC Minister will seek support for a committee to review the relationship between Manx Care and DHSC.

Carole Male and Julie Stokes however say they have concerns about this idea and said any committee needs to have professionals involved, not just politicians.

Posting to social media, Carole said that they have concerns about Ms Christian’s plan.

She said: “Apparently she’s forming a Select Committee made up of members to review our health care.

“If this happens we will just get delays and then more of the same not fit for purpose healthcare. We strongly feel that this committee should be made up of the following people :-

A political member to chair it; The President of the IOM Medical Society; A Consultant from Nobles; 1 Nurse; 1 Hospital Manager;1 Service user/lay person; 1 GP.

“This is the only way things will change – by including medics and service users on this committee.”

No Committee

Meanwhile Onchan MHK Julie Edge has said there shouldn’t even be a committee.

She said: “Another committee of this nature will only waste more time while our health services and professionals continue to suffer and we the public do with inequality in our care.”

Committee

When Tynwald is asked to support the motion by the minister, it will be that it look at the division of responsibilities and statutory relationship between the Department of Health and Social Care and Manx Care.

However, Manx.News is aware of at least one MHK who was minded to seek that the remit to be expanded to consider wider issues about Manx Care.

The experiment in health services was set up in 2021 and has been beset with faced significant challenges along the way amid declining public satisfaction.
