Politicians Have ‘Trashed’ Our Heritage

A heritage campaigner has launched a blistering attack on politicians over the failure to restore horse tram tracks to the Sea Terminal, despite repeated Tynwald votes.

Charles Guard was addressing the state of the heritage rail system in the year the horse tramway is marking the 150th anniversary.

“This is a piece of World Heritage that you have trashed because it’s not back there,” Mr Guard said.

He highlighted a 2017 Tynwald vote and a subsequent Department of Infrastructure promise that tracks would be reinstated “in line with the express will of Tynwald” during the following winter.

Mr Guard dismissed funding excuses, pointing to millions spent on the Steam Packet and the Liverpool ferry terminal.

“But you’re really expecting us to believe that in nine years you haven’t been able to scrape together the money to put some tracks back along a bit of grass so a horse can pull a tram to the sea terminal,” he said. “You must think we’re stupid.”

He questioned why no member had challenged the inaction. “Tynwald is supposed to hold the executive to account, and you simply are not doing that.”

Addressing the forthcoming election, Mr Guard warned: “Please don’t any one of you dare put on your manifesto that you support Manx Heritage, because we just won’t believe you.”
