Politicians Praise Daniel’s Family

Politicians have paid tribute to the family of Daniel Boyde as Tynwald approved landmark changes to the organ donation laws.

Daniel’s family watched from the public gallery as politicians finalised regulations implementing the new opt-out system, which will take effect on January 1.

Cabinet Office Minister David Ashford praised the family’s tireless campaigning, saying: “This significant change in the legal basis for organ donations is a lasting legacy of Daniel Boyd, an accumulation of years of campaigning by his family to improve the organ donation process on the island.”

Under the new system, known as “Daniel’s Law”, all adults over 18 will be presumed to consent to organ donation unless they opt out, though families will still be consulted.

Legislation

Mr Ashford also honoured former MHK Martyn Perkins, who first introduced the legislation in 2018 as a private member’s bill.

He said: “Martin was exceptionally passionate about this bill. Any of us who were around in the last administration know just how tirelessly he worked to get it over the line.”

Clare Barber, who is also a nurse, told members: “I’ve seen first hand the importance of organ donation for those waiting for a donor organ and for those who found comfort in knowing that the death of their loved one allowed for the gift of life to others.”

The legislation includes strict regulations on tissue use and will be supported by a major public awareness campaign.

Mr Ashford confirmed the publicity drive would continue “right up until the moment that this comes into force”.
