A machine fault led to a motorist being left out of pocket after their online‑renewed car tax disc arrived with a £2.43 “postage unpaid” surcharge.
The customer, who had waited more than three weeks for the disc to arrive, received a card from the Post Office requesting payment for insufficient postage.
After paying the charge, they discovered the underpaid item was the tax disc they had already paid for online.
Machine Fault
In response, the Isle of Man Post Office said a machine fault meant some letters did not receive a postmark during processing.
In a statement to Manx.News, a spokesperson for the IOMPO said: “During mail processing that day, a fault with one of our machines meant that not all letters received a postmark.
“To avoid delays, we continued processing the mail for delivery, and suspended our usual revenue protection process for affected items (where additional postage charges are applied to underpaid mail).
“Unfortunately, this letter was still charged under the revenue protection process. We have apologised to the customer for the inconvenience and will be happy to refund the surcharge.”
