Rapid Response Prevented Fire Spreading

The quick actions of fire crews from multiple stations prevented a property fire in the south of the island from spreading.

In the early hours of this morning (July 8) fire crews from three fire stations were called to a residential property fire in Port Erin.

Shortly after 1am fire crews from Rushen, Castletown and Douglas were called to the fire on Orchard Road.

Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service says that upon arrival flames were coming out of the windows of the ground floor and cylinders were exploding.

The service confirmed that all persons were out of the property as the fire crews arrived.

Property Fire

Six breathing apparatus teams were deployed to control and extinguish the fire within the ground floor, and to check for fire spread in the other properties within the building.

Crews further checked the building with radiation dosimeters, gas detection and thermal image cameras, then used positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the property of the smoke.

The crews were in attendance for approximately four hours.

Prevention of Spreading

The call to the emergency services was made by an occupier who was alerted to the incident due to the smoke detector being activated.

The emergency services says that this incident highlights the importance of working smoke alarms, when there is a fire, smoke spreads fast.

It has reiterated the message that working smoke alarms save lives.

Station Officer Matt Tyrer, says that working smoke alarms ‘give early warning in the case of fire which can enable occupants to get out of the property in the early stages of a fire, which in turn allows us to get to you more quickly’.
