Port St Mary RNLI volunteers were called to assist a 30 foot Catamaran in a position 25 miles south of the island.
The casualty had sailed from Bangor in North Wales and suffered the sails being blown out and only enough fuel to manoeuvre in harbour.
In addition to the RNLI response a Coastguard fixed wing aircraft circled overhead to assist in locating the casualty and a merchant ship Pacific Grebe arrived on scene to afford some protection in the rough seas with the South South Westerly wind force four gusting to seven winds and a one and a half metre swell.
The RNLI said: “A tow was established in difficult conditions at and it was originally intended to take the casualty to Douglas, but the state of the sea and wind direction made progress very slow and Coxswain Morgan Guy decided to proceed to Port St Mary which ensured improved towing conditions.
“The casualty was tied up alongside the breakwater in Port St Mary and assisted by the shore crew and local Coastguards.”
For Juan Maddrell, this was his first shout since qualifying as a crew member.
He said that “all the hours of training came together and the shout had been a text book operation with all his fellow crew members working as a team and praised the camaraderie”.
