The Rotary Club of Rushen & Western Mann will mark World Polio Day this week with an £1,800 donation to Rotary International’s PolioPlus Fund.
The contribution, made through the End Polio Now campaign, will support vaccination, surveillance and response efforts aimed at eradicating the disease worldwide.
Rotary and its partners have reduced global polio cases by 99.9% over the past four decades, with wild poliovirus now remaining endemic in only Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Club member and polio survivor Simon Jennings welcomed the donation, saying vaccination has protected countless children and helped bring the world closer to ending the disease for good.
Thanks to Rotary International’s partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the club’s £1,800 contribution will be matched two-to-one, tripling its value.
Club president Cecilia Ngotho said Rotary was proud to support the campaign, adding that while significant progress has been made, continued efforts are needed until polio is eradicated completely.
