Changes have been implemented at the Western Civic Amenity Site following updates to landfill management on the island.
This means that plasterboard and insulation now required to be segregated for recycling.
The site has purchased an enclosed, covered skip specifically for the storage of plasterboard, which was delivered earlier this week. The move follows notification from the DoI’s Waste Management Unit.
Previously, plasterboard and insulation were mixed and disposed of at Wrights Pit North. Now, plasterboard will be fully recycled through a local disposal route, and insulation materials will be processed separately.
From today onwards, staff assistance and supervision will be required when depositing these materials. Users are advised to seek guidance from a site operative if they require access to the building materials area.
The site has clarified definitions for waste types. Inert waste includes soil, ceramics, tiles, plaster, mortar and cement.
Plasterboard MUST be dry and free from contaminants like wood, tiles or insulations. Insulations covers Rockwool, fibreglass and materials similar to “Kingspan,” while rubble refers to brick, rubble, stone and hardcore.
“Currently we do not have the capacity to accept wet or insulated plasterboard,” a site statement said. “This is still processed for landfill elsewhere but due to limited space and skips we cannot accept it on site.”
“If insulation is removed from plasterboard prior to depositing then we can segregate it accordingly.”
Commercial transfer stations may be capable of accepting waste that cannot be processed at the site.
