Slane lhiat to the Ballaglass wizard

Many of us have enjoyed the Ballaglass wizard over the past ten years, but now we must say goodbye to our mystical friend from one of our magical glens.

Sadly, nature has taken its course and the beloved carving has now rotted away.

The Ballaglass wizard was created by David Rielly and Nick Barlow after the pair were asked to remove the beech tree as it had been spotted to have a large crack in its upper canopy, and due to its proximity to the cottage it had to be made safe.

Upon dismantling of the tree the pair discovered the bottom of the trunk to be sound, so suggested the carving to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.

On a Facebook post, David said, ‘Jason Bolt the notoriously tight fisted head forester took some persuading thankfully Graeme Watson help twist his arm’.

In September 2013 the talented duo took on transforming the trunk.

Thank you for the carving guys, many of us have enjoyed it and will miss it greatly.
