The DoI is reviewing the level of cones and fencing support it provides to events, after confirming it no longer has the staff or resources to maintain the service at previous levels.
The issue was raised in the House of Keys by Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Tim Glover, who asked why equipment had been withdrawn from some events and which events were still being supported.
Infrastructure Minister Tim Crookall MHK said the department “continues to provide loan equipment to all major island events, including local and charity events” but warned that the service may need to change.
He told MHKs the department should not be undermining private companies offering the same services, and that any withdrawal of support would be communicated to organisers in good time.
Staff Issues
Minister Crookall said the main challenge was not rising hire costs but staffing, noting that equipment is often not returned on time and staff must be sent to retrieve it.
He confirmed the department holds a mix of its own equipment and hired stock but could not immediately provide figures on quantities or value.
Members pressed the Minister on the impact on community events and road safety. Minister Crookall said these concerns would form part of the review, adding that event organisers typically work closely with the Highways Division when closures or safety measures are required.
The review will consider value for money, the department’s responsibilities, and the future balance between public provision and private hire.
