Summit Bring Back European Bronze

Summit Grappling Academy’s Sarah Redmond has brought back bronze from the BJJF European Championships.

Held Lisbon, Portugal, the championship is the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Europe.

Liam Blakemore, Bryan Nguyen and Sarah Redmond all represented the island at the European Championships.

Summit in Europe

Liam Blakemore encountered a number of Gi (kimono) uniform check issues before being permitted to fight but remained calm throughout, utilising lots of aspects of his wider game to give his opponent a very good challenge.

Unfortunately, it was not enough to secure the points needed to advance to the next round but a great experience for the young Competitor nonetheless.

This was Bryan Nguyen’s first European Championships and his second ever competition.

His fast paced style and energetic tenacity kept his opponent on the back foot throughout the match and Bryan came away with a win as a result in the qualifying rounds.

Although, unable to replicate the same performance in his next round this was a great first outing which proved Bryan deserved to be amongst the level of competitors he encountered.

Sarah Brings Homes the Bronze

Coach Sarah Redmond, who only recently re-started competing after sustaining a foot injury in 2023 found herself in an experienced bracket of Competitors, one of which was the 2023 European Champion.

Sarah had been working hard towards this tournament, the second biggest in the world, and succinctly followed the training camp supplied by the Squad Coaches.

This was particularly evident in her quarterfinal match where she dominated her opponent with a fantastic use of pressure and pace leading to a points victory from a top scoring position.

Sarah brought home a well deserved Bronze medal in her first European Championships.

Future Events

Summit have at least three further competitions coming up in the first part of the year with a focus back on the British Open now taking place in July.

In 2024, they brought home three British Championships from this event and further multiple international tournaments throughout the year.

SGA would like to sincerely thank Hartford Homes for their ongoing support and assistance in helping each of the SGA competitors to compete internationally.
