Local Taekwondo athlete Nino Onto, finished in third place and won three medals at a qualifying event for the World Poomsae Championships.
Nino was selected to compete in the under 30’s as part of the British Poomsae Team.
The competition in London was part of his selection criteria for the World Championships that will be held in Hong Kong later this year.
Taekwondo
On May 25 and 26, Nino took part in the NextGen Taekwondo event in London.
The event attracted over 600 entries, 110 teams, and 28 countries from around the world.
His first event of the weekend was the Team Under 30 Male. Although the teams performance was not their best, they managed to secure a gold medal with a close margin of 0.03.
The next event was the pair under 30, where they secured third place.
The final event was the individual under 30 which was the important event since the result would give him the edge for the qualification.
Three medals
The preliminary round was smooth sailing, he was number one, but then fell to third in the semifinal and in the final round.
Nino managed to beat his personal best with a score of 7.77, but this only landed him in third place.
Overall, Nino acquired one gold and two bronze, and was the only Team GB under 30 member who managed to stand on the podium.
